Rust: Still a Long Road Ahead

Nowadays it is hard to surprise someone with a virtual post-apocalyptic survival. There are so many of them that some gamers even start joking and call them “Bean Can Survivals.” Sure, the whole surviving idea has always been interesting for various people and if you can’t realize your ideas in a real life (which we do not recommend), then it might be a good idea to reach your goals and desires at least in a virtual life. Rust is another survival game with another pretty simple scenario. And if you want to know how bad or how good it is – you are very welcome.

It is very important to mention that right now the game is on its alpha development stage, which means – it is doomed to have lots of issues and problems. Keeping that in mind, we will try to do our best and leave the prejudice behind. It is no good to play a bad cop when there is no need to, so – we will try to be nice. So, the Rust. It is another survival from another developers’ company who is said to change our vision of the games alike. Sure, like lots of other titles, it has some potential, probably, – even more than you can imagine, but if its creators do not plan any major changes, then I am afraid it’s already a no-no to the potential buyers. Let me explain why.

The Rust and its Rusty Idea

If I was asked to describe Rust in a few words, I would say it’s a strange combination of DayZ and Minecraft. Yes, you’ve heard me right – Minecraft. Just imagine something that was before the actually DayZ alpha release and mix it with the recipe idea from Minecraft. In general, this is exactly what you are going to get. But unlike DayZ – Rust is not that attractive in all senses. Pretty poor graphics with pretty poor backgrounds mixed with pretty poor animations, though – I did like the animal animations and hunting in general. As for the Minecraft part – the number of recipes as well as opportunities is pretty limited. You sure can run all over the place, gather resources and create items. After all – this is the basic idea of the game, but at the same time – it would be nice to have a couple of logical and true-to-live moments instead of making a real M-16 from a piece of iron. The possibility of making some professional cloths and items looks kind of strange. You can kill a bad guy and take a gun from him but you can start collecting resources and “cook” a gun or a west just from your crafting menu.  I do not know how about you, but this is not the way I see the surviving (though, it would be great, if everyone in the world could do things alike).

Rust 2

Start the Rust

A lot like in Minecraft, you start the game with only three items in your hands: a rock, a torch, a medkit, and, of course, you task is to change this unfair condition. The funniest thing is that you can actually use the stone to cut wood (it kind of reminds the famous block game, doesn’t it?). Of course, when you start gathering resources, you can change the status quo and start crafting items including weapons and else. This is important because otherwise you won’t be able to protect yourself from wild animals and natural causes. Though, animals are not the biggest threat in this game and this is a part when the DayZ scenario comes into play. Rust is an online based game which means – you will be playing with others, which also means – you can’t know for sure who is good and who is bad and as far as the world is pretty poor around, it is very likely that the next guy you meet will send you to the Kingdom of Dead and you will have to start all over again.

Rust 5

Do not be afraid to die in the very first night for a couple of times. This happened to me and will very likely happen to you. One of the main reasons for this unfortunate outcome is the cruel reality of poor resourcing. You see, it’s pretty hard to find something useful in the first hours of gameplay, mostly because you do not know what to look for and how to use the items. Just a simple example: killing a wolf will give you lots of cloths, animal fat, blood and chicken. Ye, killing a wolf gives you raw chicken. Don’t ask me – I have no idea why this happens.

Also – the crafting menu is kind of strange. You are not supposed to keep your character occupied in the crafting process. All you have to do is to give him a certain task and it will be done on the background. The crafting time usually depends on the item, but as a rule it’s a matter of seconds or minutes. For instance, crafting a camp fire takes 20 seconds. If developers are going to leave the crafting menu in this condition, it will definitely surprise gamers and will start the whole set of jokes. You will get what I mean when you see the crafting menu.

Rust 7

Rust is Limited on Resources

I was really surprised with one particular moment that kind of stunned me. Just imagine a situation when you are cutting wood from a big tree using a big stone. You do this for a minute or so and when the inventory gets filled with wood, the tree says “no more wood here”. So, a chopped tree does not disappear or falls down. It simple says that it has no wood. And the game has lots of ridiculous things like the one with the tree. But, I won’t spoil you the fun of finding them out yourself.

Yes, I do understand that it’s only an alpha testing and that there is still a long way ahead, but hey – when the game is not ready even on 50%, it is kind of inappropriate to call it “Alpha.” Right now Rust is more like a game to have some fun with than a serious project where you can survive and make a difference. Crafting items is far from being even slightly realistic and building shelters reminds placing castles and small houses in the Age of Empires or any other strategy. And this is only the tip of the iceberg you are going to see on your own eyes.

Rust 6

Rusty Conclusions

Maybe, you do not feel it, but I really tried to make Rust look not that bad. Unlike other projects, it still has some potential to become a decent survival. Well, I am not sure that Rust will manage to beat the already mentioned DayZ or else but it might become a favored time killer. However, this is going to happen only if its developers invest all the possible effort. At this moment Rust does look like a joke and considering the number of funny videos uploaded on YouTube, it really is one.
